Alma Z Johnson Stein

Mrs. Alma Stein was born in Kilgore, Texas, March 18, 1890, to the union of Jane and Charlie Johnson, both long deceased.  The family moved to Palestine when she was a little girl, and lived here until she passed.  She finished public school in Palestine and completed the Normal Course at Prairie View.  She later received her A.B. Degree from Paul Quinn College.  She taught in the Public School Systems of Ponta, Tennessee Colony for the last 46 years of her professional life she taught in the Palestine Public School System, where she retired in 1955.
She joined Grand Chapel A.M.E. church in her early young womanhood and remained until her Father called her home.
She was united in Holy Matrimony with Mr. Jesse R. Stein on August 2, 1915 which union lasted to the end.  After nineteen months of illness, she departed this life at 12:05 a.m. July 15, 1961.  She is survived by her husband a nephew, A. Maceo Johnson; a grandniece, Karen Johnson of Dallas; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Grant Chapel AME Church for Mrs. Alma Z. Stein, retired teacher, who died Saturday in a local hospital after a brief illness.  Rev. Albert Jones will officiate and burial will be in Memorial Cemetery.  Her husband, Jesse R. Stein and  a nephew survive.
Mrs. Stein began teaching in Cherokee Co. in 1907, taught in Tennessee Colony the next year and in 1909 came to the Palestine Independent Schools. A t the time of her retirement in 1955, she had been a teacher for 46 years and is remembered by hundreds of her pupils. Arrangements by Davis Funeral Home.
